Development and validation of an environmental DNA protocol to detect an invasive Caribbean freshwater fish, the guppy ( Poecilia reticulata )

چکیده

We describe the development and validation of a qPCR assay to detect Poecilia reticulata, highly invasive species freshwater fish Caribbean islands, through environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling. Originating from Trinidad, this is detrimental countless native tropical communities. A assay, consisting set primers fluorescent probe, amplifying 214 base pair target region mitochondrial Cytochrome B gene was designed for P. reticulata existing sequence data. The assessed specificity, with no evidence amplification in closely related or sympatrically distributed non-target species. In vitro tests indicate that consistently detects down concentrations 2.0 × 10−5 ng/μl. developed provides new, practical tool monitoring habitats throughout Caribbean, allowing early rapid detection conservation concern.

Social networks in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata).

Social network theory is used to elicit details of the social structure of a population of free-ranging guppies, Poecilia reticulata. They were found to have a complex and highly structured social network, which exhibited characteristics consistent with the 'small world' phenomenon. Stable partner associations between individuals were observed, a finding that fulfils the basic prerequisite for ...

Long-term exposure to bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) inhibits growth of guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata).

Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) is a widely used plasticizer that is a commonly found contaminant of aquatic environments. However, little is known about the long-term effects of DEHP on fish development, as previous studies yielded conflicting results and mostly investigated the effects of concentrations higher than those found in natural habitats. We thus aimed to investigate the effects of...

Reasons for the Invasive Success of a Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) Population in Trinidad

The introduction of non-native species into new habitats poses a major threat to native populations. Of particular interest, though often overlooked, are introductions of populations that are not fully reproductively isolated from native individuals and can hybridize with them. To address this important topic we used different approaches in a multi-pronged study, combining the effects of mate c...

Cross-generational environmental effects and the evolution of offspring size in the Trinidadian guppy Poecilia reticulata.

The existence of adaptive phenotypic plasticity demands that we study the evolution of reaction norms, rather than just the evolution of fixed traits. This approach requires the examination of functional relationships among traits not only in a single environment but across environments and between traits and plasticity itself. In this study, I examined the interplay of plasticity and local ada...
